JFJ wants INDECOM to conduct thorough probe into death of prisoner, at Chapleton Lockup in Clarendon
Human Rights Lobby Group, Jamaicans For Justice (JFJ), says it’s hopeful that the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), will conduct a thorough probe into the death of a prisoner, at the Chapleton Lockup in Clarendon, this morning.
The name of the deceased has not been revealed.
Reports are that at about 3:15 A.M., lawmen on duty heard unusual sounds coming from one of the cells and made checks.
The male prisoner was seen suffering from a wound which was reportedly inflicted by other inmates.
He was taken to the May Pen Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police Commissioner, Dr. Kevin Blake says he has instructed the Inspectorate and Professional Standard Oversight Bureau, to commence an immediate investigation into the circumstances that led to the prisoner’s death.
Speaking with IRIE FM News, JFJ’S Executive Director Mickel Jackson welcomed this call.
She said when a person’s civil liberties have been withheld, the state has full responsibility for that person’s human rights, especially their fundamental right to life.
Ms. Jackson expressed hope that INDECOM will also conduct a thorough probe.
She also called for the outcome of the investigation to be made public.
