JDF intercepts Haitian vessel in distress, with 26 males aboard
The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) intercepted a Haitian vessel that was in distress outside of Jamaica’s territorial waters today.
In a post on his social media, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the 28-foot wooden sailboat, which had been at sea for 55 hours, was carrying 26 males including a child.
The vessel was reportedly traveling from Haiti to the eastern coast of Jamaica.
Mr. Holness said preliminary reports indicate the vessel experienced structural issues, possibly caused by overloading, leaving its occupants vulnerable at sea.
He said the Maritime Air and Cyber Command responded promptly, ensuring the safety of the individuals onboard.
The rescued passengers are receiving medical attention and humanitarian support, while authorities conduct further investigations into the circumstances of the voyage.
Meantime, the prime minister said recent investments in the capabilities of Jamaica’s security forces have been invaluable in managing potential migration crises caused by the situation in Haiti.
This includes investments in border security and domain awareness through new offshore patrol vessels, radars, helicopters, and maritime patrol aircraft.
Holness said the equipment have also been very effective in the interdiction of drugs and illegal fishing in our waters.
