JCTU hopeful wage negotiations will be concluded before Dr. Nigel Clarke leaves the finance ministry

The Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) says it is seeking to meet with Dr. Nigel Clarke about wage related matters this week before he demits the post of finance minister.

Dr. Clarke will become the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Deputy Managing Director effective October 31.

His replacement is to be announced soon.

Concerns have been raised about the impact Dr. Clarke’s departure will have on ongoing wage talks with unions representing public sector workers, as there are outstanding matters.

The JCTU, which represents the majority of some 100,000 public sector workers, says it is important that the matters are settled before Dr. Clarke demits office.

JCTU President St. Patrice Ennis says Dr. Clarke has been involved the wage discussions from day one and if they are not concluded during his tenure, there could be challenges.

Meantime, Mr. Ennis said the protracted talks have caused some members to be on edge.

He said failure to conclude the talks soon could result in members taking industrial action.
