The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is reporting 81 arrests and the recovery of $7.3 million worth of livestock in December last year.

The police noted that it is celebrating a significant victory in its ongoing battle against agricultural crimes. 

In a release the Constabulary Force said this was a result of its recently formed Agricultural Protection Branch.

The arrests were made under the Agriculture Produce Act (APA), Larceny Act, NAITS and other related legislation.

The police said during the period it also secured 34 convictions.

According to lawmen, the JCF’s decision to establish the APB was a strategic response to the persistent and devastating impact of agricultural crime on farmers and the national economy.

It noted that for years, praedial larceny has eroded farming confidence, stifled investment and threatened food security across the island.

The JCF said it hopes the success also serves as a powerful deterrent to those who prey on the agricultural sector.
