JCF activates preparedness plan as TS Melissa approaches; steps being taken to protect residents and businesses
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has activated its Hurricane Preparedness Plan in anticipation of the possible impact of Tropical Storm Melissa.
At 4:00 p.m., Melissa was about 183 miles southeast of Morant Point and 215 miles southeast of Kingston.
Though it is currently a tropical storm, forecasters warn that it could develop into a major hurricane.
According to the Meteorological Service, hurricane-force winds are possible from as early as tomorrow.
Speaking at Jamaica House this afternoon, Police Commissioner Dr. Kevin Blake said the JCF has activated its Incident Command Centres, updated its shelter security plans and ensured that there are officers liaising with the nation’s disaster preparedness teams, among other initiatives.
He also noted that efforts will be made to protect residents and businesses.
