Jamaicans among star-studded field for Athlos NYC Meet
Jamaicans Megan Tapper, Jonielle Smith, and Natoya Goule-Toppin are among a stellar line-up of elite athletes set to compete at the Athlos NYC Meet, which takes place today at the Icahn Stadium in New York.
Founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Athlos is a groundbreaking, all-women professional track and field league aimed at celebrating and elevating women’s excellence in athletics. The two-day meet, that got underway on Thursday, promises world-class competition, increased visibility for female athletes, and significant financial rewards.
Olympic bronze medalist Megan Tapper will headline Jamaica’s charge in the 100-metre hurdles, going up against a powerful field that includes Olympic champion Masai Russell, Bahamian star Devynne Charlton, Alaysha Johnson, and World Championships bronze medalist Grace Stark.
In the 100 metres, Jonielle Smith, who anchored Jamaica’s silver medal-winning women’s sprint relay team at the last World Championships, will face off with a quality field featuring Brittany Brown, Zoe Hobbs, and Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith of the Ivory Coast.
Middle-distance standout Natoya Goule-Toppin will contest the women’s 800 metres, where she’s set to meet formidable competition from Olympic silver medalist Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain and former world champion Mary Moraa of Kenya.
The meet’s line-up reads like a who’s who of women’s track and field, also featuring stars such as Anavia Battle, Tara Davis-Woodhall, Faith Kipyegon, and Ethiopian middle-distance legend Gudaf Tsegay — the double world record holder in the 1500 and 5000 metres.
Each race carries a US$100,000 prize purse, with US$60,000 going to the winner.
The event will also include a special tribute to recently retired sprint icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, celebrating her remarkable contributions to global athletics and her lasting influence on generations of female sprinters.
