Several Jamaican sporting delegations are departing the island today for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which get underway in Glasgow, Scotland, on Friday.

Jamaica’s track and field team, led by Technical Leader Maurice Wilson, is scheduled to depart tonight shortly after 7:00. Jamaica Basketball Association President Paulton Gordon will also leave tonight, joining the remainder of the basketball delegation, which is already in Scotland.

Jamaica will compete in both the men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball tournaments at the Games.

Meanwhile, the Sunshine Girls are already in Scotland and earlier today completed another training session at Pollock Park as they prepare to improve on their silver medal performance from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony will take place on Thursday inside the OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow.

The ceremony will make history as the first Commonwealth Games opening ceremony to be staged entirely indoors.

Jamaica’s flag bearer will be swimmer Collin McKenzie, while world-class netball star Shamera Sterling-Humphrey has been selected as the baton bearer.

President of the Jamaica Rifle Association, Rohan Wilson, will serve as Jamaica’s Chef de Mission.

A total of 76 Jamaican athletes will represent the national colours across 10 sporting disciplines, including track and field, basketball, boxing, swimming, and gymnastics.
