Jamaica Teachers’ Association still mounting defence regarding lawsuit filed by former president La Sonya Harrison

President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, Dr. Mark Smith says though the Association may have opinions over the necessity of past president, La Sonya Harrison’s lawsuit, she has the constitutional right to file it.

Mrs. Harrison who headed the Association from 2022 to 2023, filed a lawsuit earlier this year in the Supreme Court.

She is seeking a declaration that the online voting in March 2023 at a special conference to accept the Government’s wage offer, is unlawful.

She contends that the voting process was not in keeping with the Association’s Constitution and is seeking a declaration that it is of no legal effect.

When the news first emerged, then-president Leighton Johnson indicated that the Association had retained lawyers who were examining documents relating to the lawsuit.

IRIE FM News sought an update from the new president, Dr. Mark Smith, who noted that the Association was still mounting its defence.
