Jamaica sweep Puerto Rico, make history with back-to-back offensive fireworks in FIBA Americas Qualifiers

Jamaica’s national senior men’s basketball team etched their names into the record books on Monday, becoming the first country in the history of the FIBA Americas World Cup Qualifiers to score 90-plus points in each of their first two fixtures.

This historic achievement came as the JamRockerz battled to a gritty 97-92 victory on the road against Puerto Rico at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, propelling them to the top of the Group B standings with a maximum four points from two matches.

Leading the offensive charge was Chase Audige, who poured in a game-high 20 points, while the ever-reliable Kofi Cockburn turned in a dominant all-round performance with 15 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal. Romaine Thomas also made his presence felt with 18 points, while Tyran De Lattibeaudiere added 15—including two clutch free throws with 10.3 seconds to play—to seal the result after Puerto Rico had clawed back from a 20-point deficit to within three.

Kentan Facey was another key contributor, posting 9 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists. Speaking after the win, Facey noted the emotional importance of the moment:

“It’s been an amazing atmosphere to begin with here in Puerto Rico. The support from the fans here has been incredible. It’s been two incredible games so we were really grateful and happy that we were able to compete in these games and bring some joy back to our country given that we’ve just weathered a really bad storm… It’s good to come out here and represent our country well and give us something positive to celebrate.”

Monday’s result completed a two-match sweep of Puerto Rico, following Jamaica’s tight 92-90 win on Friday. The JamRockerz’ accuracy from beyond the arc—draining 13 of 27 three-pointers at a sizzling 48.2 percent—has also signalled that this is a team emerging as a serious contender for one of the seven available spots at the 2027 FIBA World Cup.

Next on the horizon for Jamaica is a return home, where they will host the Bahamas and Canada in February before travelling to face both nations away in July.
