Jamaica surge up FIBA Rankings after historic sweep of Puerto Rico

Jamaica’s national senior men’s basketball team has made one of the biggest leaps in world basketball, climbing eight places to No. 87 on the latest FIBA World Rankings following their impressive performances in the recent FIBA Americas World Cup Qualifiers.

The rise comes on the back of a landmark achievement in Puerto Rico, where the Jamrockers recorded back-to-back victories on the road to complete a rare sweep of the regional powerhouse. The results delivered one of the program’s most significant moments in recent years and injected new momentum into their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Jamaica’s eight-spot jump makes them the second-biggest movers globally—surpassed only by Rwanda, who climbed nine places to No. 81. The rankings boost also cements the Rick Turner–coached team as the No. 1 men’s basketball nation in the Caribbean and 18th in the Americas region.

At the top of the global standings, Olympic champions the United States remain No. 1, followed by world and EuroBasket champions Germany, No. 3 Serbia, No. 4 France, and No. 5 Canada. The rest of the unchanged top 10 includes Australia, Spain, Argentina, Lithuania, and Brazil.

Within the Americas, several regional rivals remain inside the top 50: Puerto Rico (16), Dominican Republic (21), Venezuela (29), Mexico (30), and Uruguay (43). They are followed by Bahamas (52), Colombia (55), Panama (58), Chile (62), Cuba (69), Nicaragua (74), Costa Rica (83) and the US Virgin Islands (84).

Next up for the Jamrockers are a crucial pair of home games in February against the Bahamas and Canada, before the reverse fixtures in July. Jamaica is vying for one of seven coveted spots at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.
