Jamaica Set to Bid Farewell to Reggae Legend Max Romeo

The nation is gearing up to pay tribute to the iconic Reggae pioneer Maxwell Livingston Smith, better known as Max Romeo.

In a post on social media Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange announced a Service of Thanksgiving in his honour.

Minister Grange in her post shared that the ceremony will take place at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre on Saturday, May 17, starting at 11:30 a.m.  She said the celebration will honour Max Romeo’s life and legacy and will include heartfelt tributes and captivating live performances.

The Minister expressed gratitude to have been entrusted by Max Romeo’s family to support the arrangements. She extended her sincerest condolences to Max Romeo’s loved ones, including his wife Sandra ‘Charm’ Smith, children Azana ‘Xana’ Romeo and Azizzi Romeo, family members, friends, and associates in the music industry.

As Jamaica comes together to bid farewell to this Reggae legend, Minister Grange encouraged everyone to celebrate Max Romeo’s enduring legacy, whose music gave voice to resistance, love, and truth.

Max Romeo died in hospital on Friday, April 11, 2025, after being admitted on April 10. He was 80 years old.

Max Romeo was best known for hit songs such as War Inna Babylon, Let the Power Fall, and Revelation Time.
