Jamaica sends 12-member squad to inaugural Barbados Grand Prix

National junior record holder Bouwahgie Nkrumie and World U20 sprint relay gold medallist Serena Cole are in a 12-member Jamaican team selected by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) to represent the island at the inaugural Barbados Grand Prix, set to take place this Saturday at the Usain Bolt Stadium in Bridgetown.

The meet, which marks a new addition to the regional athletics calendar, has drawn considerable attention, and Jamaica’s participation is led by a promising mix of rising stars and experienced sprinters.

Cole, the former Edwin Allen High School standout, will compete in the women’s 4x100m relay, where she is set to team up with Jodean Williams the fourth place finisher in the women’s 100 metres at the Jamaican Trials in 11.02 seconds, Jonielle Smith, who was fifth in 11.06s and Krystal Sloley who was third in heat 2 in the semifinals in a time of 11.21s.

On the men’s side, Nkrumie —who ran 10.09s in the men’s 100m final—will line up in the men’s 4x100m relay. He will be joined by Sprintec teammates Kadrian Goldson and Odain McPherson along with Adrian Kerr.

The Jamaican contingent also includes a team for the 4x400m mixed relay, comprising Roneisha McGregor, Shanakaye Anderson, Jeremy Bembridge, and Bovel McPherson.

The delegation, which departed for Barbados on Wednesday, is being led by head coach Paul Francis, who brings extensive experience. He will be supported by assistant coach Lamar Richards, team manager Brian Smith and massage therapist Jowayne Johnson.
