Jamaica Scorpions head into day two with strong opening performance against Leeward Islands Hurricanes
The Jamaica Scorpions will resume their second-round Regional Four-Day encounter at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Day Two with a solid score of 306 for 9, having gotten off to promising start on the opening day against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes.
Captain John Campbell was the standout performer for the Scorpions on Wednesday’s first day, showcasing his leadership and skill with a magnificent 126 off 150 balls. This was Campbell’s sixth first-class century and his first since returning from a 2022 suspension. His innings, which featured 11 boundaries and 3 sixes, anchored the team’s efforts at the crease.
Campbell and opening partner Carlos Brown (22) laid the foundation for the Scorpions, sharing a solid 79-run stand. Following Brown’s departure, Campbell formed another important partnership with Kirk McKenzie (33), adding 84 for the second wicket. However, after their promising start, the Scorpions lost their way slightly, with Brad Barnes top-scoring from the middle order with an unbeaten 53. Odean Smith (17), Jevor Royal (14), and Jermaine Blackwood (10) contributed to the total, but none could convert their starts into a big score.
At the close of play, Barnes and Tamarie Redwood, yet to face a ball, will return to the crease as the Scorpions look to build on their total. Marquino Midley (2) was dismissed by Jeremiah Louis in the final over of the day, leaving the Scorpions with one wicket remaining.
Louis was the pick of the Hurricanes’ bowlers, taking 3 for 35, while Rackeem Cornwall supported with 3 for 71. Hayden Walsh also contributed with 2 for 78.
