In a major step towards advancing Jamaica’s renewable energy goals, government has secured approval from the Council for Trade and Economic Development (coted) to suspend the common external tariff (CET) on 91,600 units of lithium-ion batteries.

This suspension will be effective from February 2, 2025, to February 1, 2027.

Minister of Industry, Investment, and Commerce, Aubyn Hill, highlighted that this decision will enable Jamaican businesses to import lithium-ion batteries duty-free, reducing the investment cost in energy storage solutions.

He added that the decision will boost productivity and stimulate job creation and investment, fueling Jamaica’s economic growth.

These batteries are integral to renewable energy systems such as solar and wind power, where efficient storage is critical to ensuring a reliable energy supply.
