Jamaica finishes sixth on medal podium at World Athletics Relays
Jamaica finished sixth on the medal podium at the just concluded World Athletics relays in Guangzhou China, after winning a gold and silver at the two day meet which ended on Sunday.
Jamaica earned a silver in the inaugural Mixed 4x100metres relay and bronze in the Women’s 4×100 meters event, however the men’s 4×100 meters relay team was again unable to finish in the repechage.
In the mixed relay, the quartet of Serena Cole, Krystal Sloley, Javari Thomas, and Bryan levell crossed the line in a season best 40.44 seconds, just behind Canada who took the gold in 40.30 seconds.
Then later the quartet of Natasha Morrison, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Tina Clayton and Shericka Jackson ran a season best 42.33 seconds to take the bronze behind the fast finishing great Britain, who won the event out of lane 9 in a season best 42.21 seconds, while the silver went to Spain in 42.28 seconds.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s men’s sprint relay team who got a second chance of getting on the podium and qualifying for the World Championship in Japan in September, suffered yet another heartbreak.
This after the second leg runner Julian Forte pulled up with an injury and fell to the track, just before handing over the baton to Yohan Blake, leaving Jamaica unable to finish for the second time in two days.
However, there was redemption, for Jamaica’s men’s 4×400 meters team, who punched their ticket to the World Championships after finishing third in their second-round heat.
Rusheen Mcdonald, Demar Francis, Zandrion Barnes and Tarees Rhoden clocked 3 minutes 01.32 seconds, just behind Brazil and the Netherlands who also earned automatic qualification.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s women’s mile relay team did not contest their second-round heat.
