Jamaica experiences 165 earthquakes so far this year

Jamaica has experienced approximately 165 local earthquakes so far this year.

This is according to data provided by the Earthquake Unit at the University of West Indies, Mona campus.

The earthquake unit says of the 165 earthquake events only 10 were felt, the latest of which occurred this morning, at approximately 8: 01 AM.

That quake had a magnitude of 5.3 magnitude and was felt islandwide.

The epicentre was located approximately 6 kilometres northwest of Golden Spring, St. Andrew.

This morning’s quake brings to 19 the number of seismic events experienced by Jamaica so far this month.

In addition to this morning’s quake, only one of the other 19 were felt by residents.

That minor earthquake had a magnitude of 2.9 and was felt on August 12, 2024, at 3:51 PM in Buff Bay, Portland and surrounding areas.

Meantime, a further breakdown from the earthquake unit indicates that 20 seismic events were recorded in January, 17 in February, 20 in March, 18 in April and 20 in May.

Seismic activity peaked in June which saw 28 events being recorded.

July had 23 quakes, only one of which was felt by residents.
