President of the Jamaica Employers Federation Wayne Chen says the increase in the minimum wage from fifteen to sixteen thousand dollars is hardly surprising.

Yesterday Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness announced the increase, while making his contribution to the Budget Debate in Parliament.

He said the new wage of $16,000 will take effect June 1.

Speaking with Irie FM News this morning Mr. Chen said the aim is for Jamaicans to receive a livable wage.

He said the only way to sustainably increase wages is to improve productivity.

He added that a national conversation is needed to identify the structural and operational reforms required to achieve sustainable wages.
