Jamaica dethroned as Regional Women’s Super50 champions after narrow loss to Leeward Islands
Jamaica’s reign as Regional Women’s Super50 champions has come to an end following a heart-wrenching one-wicket defeat to the Leeward Islands at Warner Park on Monday. This loss, their third consecutive in the competition, leaves the defending champions’ hopes of retaining the title in tatters.
The Leeward Islands, led by a determined and unbeaten half-century from Amanda Edwards, clinched their first-ever Super50 victory in a thrilling encounter. Edwards played a pivotal role in her team’s chase, accumulating 88 runs, with solid support from Kimberley Anthony (37) and Jahzara Claxton (34). The trio’s contributions helped guide the Leewards across the finish line in dramatic fashion.
For Jamaica, Chadeen Nation was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for 36 runs. Celina White also contributed with the ball, picking up 2 for 42, while Corine Howell, Kade Wilmott, and Jodian Morgan each claimed a wicket.
Earlier in the match, Jamaica’s captain, Rashada Williams, played a brilliant knock, scoring 86 runs, including 8 boundaries. She was supported by Abigail Bryce, who struck 9 fours in her 72-run innings. The pair formed a strong partnership, putting on 84 runs for the 4th wicket to anchor Jamaica’s innings. The Leeward Islands’ bowling attack was led by Kimberley Anthony (5 for 34) with Amanda Edwards (2 for 42) and Jahzara Claxton (2 for 29) also chipping in.
Following this defeat, Jamaica now sits in 4th place on the points table with just 16 points from 4 matches, having won only one of their games. They now trail second-place Guyana by 10 points and are a significant 11 points behind the leaders, Trinidad and Tobago.
In other matches across the competition, Trinidad and Tobago secured a vital victory in the top-of-the-table clash against Barbados at the St. Paul’s Sports Complex. Barbados, dismissed for just 76 runs, were defeated by T&T, who chased down the target of 77 for 5. Djenaba Joseph’s 27 not out guided T&T to the win, with Anisa Mohammed (3 for 12) and Samara Ramnath (3 for 13) leading the bowling attack for the victors. The Trinidadians now lead the table on 27 while Barbados dropped to third on 24.
Meanwhile, Guyana comfortably chased down the Windward Islands’ total of 97 all out, finishing on 101 for 3 to win by 7 wickets at Conaree. Realeanna Grimmond (48 not out) and Shabika Gajnabi (not out) played crucial roles with the bat, while Plaffiana Millington (3 for 27), Cherry-Ann Fraser (2 for 16), and Ashmini Munisar (2 for 18) were the top bowlers for the Windwards. Guyana with the result moved into second spot on 26 points.
Looking ahead to the final round of preliminary matches, Jamaica will face the Windward Islands at Conaree, while Trinidad and Tobago will take on Guyana at Warner Park, and Barbados will clash with the Leeward Islands at the St. Paul’s Sports Complex.
