Jaheel Hyde announces retirement from athletics
Jaheel Hyde, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist and 2023 Pan American 400 meters hurdles gold medallist, has officially called time on his career as an athlete. The news was shared by Hyde himself in a post on his Instagram account on Sunday.
Reflecting on his journey, Hyde shared that from the moment he began in sports, his goal was clear: to become the best and to inspire a generation of athletes to follow in his footsteps. “I was blessed with the talent to excel in both track and football, but the Lord guided me toward track, and I never looked back,” Hyde wrote. His choice to focus on track and field led him to experiences he once could only dream of—setting world records as a junior, winning countless medals, and competing on the world stage against the very best.
A former standout at Wolmer’s Boys’ School, Hyde won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the ISSA Boys Championships. From there, he went on to become a two-time World Under-20 400m hurdles champion, an Olympic Youth 100m hurdles winner, and a gold medalist at the 2023 Pan American Games.
In his post, Hyde expressed deep gratitude for the experiences track and field has given him. “Track and field has shaped me into the person I am today, teaching me discipline, perseverance, and the power of belief,” he said. He went on to thank his coaches, both past and present, for pushing him to exceed his limits. “I want to sincerely thank my coaches, past and present, for pushing me beyond my limits and molding me into the athlete I became. To my family, friends, and fans your unwavering support fueled me through every high and low.”
Hyde’s personal best of 48.03 seconds ranks him fifth on the all-time Jamaican list, behind national record holder Roshawn Clarke, who set the national record at 47.34 seconds during the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. His career reached its final chapter at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he finished seventh in his semi-final.
In his post, the 28 year old also took time to thank his long time sponsor, PUMA. “A special thank you to PUMA for believing in me and standing by my side throughout my journey. Your support allowed me to perform at my best, and I’m proud to have represented such an incredible brand,” he wrote.
“Though I’m closing this chapter of my competitive career, my love for the sport will never fade,” he shared. “I hope my journey has inspired young athletes to chase their dreams with everything they have,” he added.
