Irie FM’s celebration of Jamaica’s first National Hero Marcus Garvey is in keeping with the radio station’s mandate to honour Garvey’s legacy and its significance to Jamaican pride, leadership and resilience.

The event will be held tomorrow (Sunday August 18, 2024) on the grounds of Irie FM in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, beginning at 6:00 a.m. with Ka’Bu Ma’at Kheru and Mutabaruka co-hosting the morning show, the Africa forum “Running African”.

Guest speakers include, Garvey’s son Dr. Julius Garvey, Pan African attorney at law Bert Samuels, youth representative on the Constitutional Reform Committee Sujae Boswell, UNIA Jamaica President Steven Golding and representative of the Nation of Islam Dr. Dr. David Muhammad.

This year’s staging of the celebration is being held under the theme “Social justice and civil rights: we have a voice, include us in the decision making process”.

The event will serve as a call to recognize the vital contributions of all members of the society, particularly those who have been historically marginalized and silenced, as well as a reminder that the fight for civil rights is far from over.

Irie FM Programmes Manager Clover James noted that in honouring Marcus Garvey, Irie F M recommits itself to the principles of justice, inclusion, and equality.

She added that the event is also intended to enlighten the younger generation about Garvey’s vision of self-reliance.
