Investigations are progressing into the misuse of the University Hospital of the West Indies, UHWI’s tax exemption status to facilitate the importation of goods on behalf of private companies.

The hospital’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Eric Hosin, made the statement during this morning’s sitting of parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

The UHWI was flagged by the Auditor General for the alleged breach which contributed to losses of over $20 million.

In response, the Ministry of Health and the UHWI announced measures to to review gaps in the hospital’s management and operations.

The matter was also reported to agencies including, the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the Major Organised Crime & Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) and Jamaica Customs Agency.

Providing an update, Mr. Hosin said MOCA has requested statements from some employees.

He said the Integrity Commission which is also involved in the probe will provide some findings soon.

The Acting CEO said the misuse of UHWI’s tax exemption status by private entities has been discontinued.

Mr. Hosin said UHWI staff are also receiving training in procurement.
