India tighten grip on first Test as West Indies struggle in Ahmedabad

The West Indies face a steep uphill battle after just two days of play in the opening Test against India in Ahmedabad, with the hosts firmly in control of proceedings.

Resuming on their overnight 121 for 2, India piled on the pressure to close day two at a commanding 448 for 5, taking a massive first innings lead of 286 runs with five wickets still in hand.

The standout performance came from Dhruv Jurel, who celebrated his maiden Test century in fine style. The wicketkeeper-batsman struck 15 fours and 3 sixes on his way to a top score of 125, while putting on a match-defining 206-run stand for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja, who remains unbeaten on 104.

Washington Sundar is the other not-out batsman, ending the day on 9.

Earlier in the innings, K.L. Rahul built on his overnight 53 to make an even 100, while captain Shubman Gill contributed 50 after starting the day on 18. Their third-wicket stand of 98 set the tone for India’s dominance.

For the West Indies, captain Roston Chase has been the most successful bowler so far with 2 for 90, while vice-captain Jomel Warrican, Jayden Seales, and Khary Pierre have taken a wicket apiece.

The Caribbean side had earlier been bundled out for just 162 in 44.1 overs after being asked to bat first on day one, leaving them on the back foot from the outset.

At stumps on day two, the scores read: West Indies 162 all out, India 448 for 5.

Play resumes tonight at 11:00 p.m. Jamaica time with India looking to extend their dominance and the West Indies desperate to find a way back into the contest.
