It was another difficult outing for the West Indies as India maintained firm control of the second Test at stumps on Day 2 in Delhi.

Set a daunting first-innings target of 519, the visitors reached 140 for 4 at the close of play, still trailing by 378 runs with six wickets in hand. Shai Hope (31 not out) and Tevin Imlach (14 not out) were at the crease, sharing in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 33 as they tried to steady the innings.

Earlier, opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul (34) and Alick Athanaze (41) provided some resistance, putting on 66 for the second wicket after John Campbell’s early dismissal for 10. However, the middle order faltered, with captain Roston Chase falling for a duck — caught and bowled by Ravindra Jadeja, who led India’s attack with figures of 3 for 37.

India had earlier declared their innings at an imposing 518 for 5, after resuming the day on 318 for 2. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who began the morning on 173, was run out for 175, while captain Shubman Gill compiled an unbeaten 129, turning his overnight 20 into a composed century.

Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican was the pick of the West Indies bowlers, finishing with 3 for 98.
