INDECOM says 120 fatal shootings have been reported since January 1

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says 120 people have been fatally shot by members of the security forces since the start of the year.

Ten of these individuals were fatally shot this month (September).

The latest incident occurred on Wednesday, along Cottage Drive in Gregory Park, St. Catherine. The deceased has not yet been officially identified.

INDECOM says police report that a team of officers went in pursuit of the male who was seen running upon their approach.

During the pursuit, the man is alleged to have run toward a board house structure from which he allegedly pointed a weapon at the police.

The police report that they fired several shots in response to the male’s actions.

The man was found suffering from a gunshot wound and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A Taurus 9MM pistol with the serial number erased was reported as recovered from the deceased.

A further three homemade firearms, along with 15 live rounds in a Gatorade bottle with cornmeal, were said to have been discovered and retrieved from a cardboard box inside the board house structure.

INDECOM notes that it responded to the incident scene and carried out the relevant investigative processes.

Initial accounts of the incident were provided by the concerned officers.

The officers further reported that no body worn camera was issued or worn during the incident.

INDECOM is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the deceased male.

He was wearing a dark-coloured shirt with the words “Case Blanka” printed on the front and a pair of dark jeans pants. He is of slim build, dark complexion, and is approximately 5 ft 7 inches.
