INDECOM probing death of 20-year-old female in alleged accidental shooting
Jimoy Suckoo, 20 years old, is the eighth person who has been fatally shot in incidents involving a member of the security forces so far this year.
This was revealed by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) which says it has launched a probe into the shooting which involved an off-duty policeman.
According to the account provided by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), at approximately 7 PM, Suckoo was in a hotel room with the policeman with whom she shared a relationship.
It is alleged that the policeman’s firearm fell, and in an attempt to catch it, one round was discharged in the direction of Suckoo, hitting her.
She was reportedly taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
In a release on the incident, INDECOM says its investigation will seek to ascertain the full circumstances and actions taken which resulted in the weapon being fired.
It notes that the concerned officer’s gun was recovered, and he provided an initial account to the INDECOM investigative team.
The incident scene was examined and evidential material was recovered, processed, and packaged.
INDECOM notes further that the hands of the deceased as well as the concerned officer were swabbed for gunshot residue.
It adds that the policeman was served with a section 21 notice, which requires that he submit a statement and participate in an interview at the commission.
