Approximately 2000 People’s National Party, PNP members and supporters gathered near the Finance Ministry at Heroes Circle Downtown, Kingston this morning, calling for the appointment of Dennis Chung to the Financial Investigations Division, FID to be rescinded.

The Finance Ministry announced last Wednesday that Mr. Chung’s appointment would take effect today.

However, the PNP has called for his appointment to be reversed, citing conflict of interest.

The party expressed concern that Mr. Chung before his appointment made comments on the Prime Minister’s financial statements which the PNP says could affect how the FID carries out its probe in relation to Dr. Andrew Holness’ statutory declarations.

The PNP issued a 72 hour ultimatum for Mr. Chung’s appointment to be rescinded, but the Finance Ministry has maintained that due process was followed in selecting him.

To highlight their disapproval, PNP members and supporters clad  mainly in orange marched near the ministry demanding good governance.

Although there were light showers of rain, this did not put a damper on the PNP’s spirit as protesters sheltered under umbrellas and amplified their call.

PNP President Mark Golding dismissed claims that the protest is an act of “badmind”.

Former PNP President Dr. Peter Phillips also joined the protest.

His speech was disrupted by what appeared to be a group of JLP supporters passing by.

Meanwhile, the police say the protest by the P-N-P at Heroes Circle in Kingston, ended peacefully. 

The demonstration which began at about 9 am, ended at around midday.

Head of Police Area 4, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Michael Phipps said the protest was incident free.
