Hoteliers in Portland assured that safety and security measures are being strengthened to protect citizens and visitors

Hoteliers in Portland are being assured that safety and security measures are being strengthened to protect citizens and visitors.

National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang gave the assurance after being questioned about plans to reduce fear being experienced by hotel staff and guests due to crime in the parish.

Portland is deemed a strategic point for the gun-for-drugs trade, with reports of criminals also migrating to the area to hide from lawmen.

The situation has sparked concerns by persons within the hotel industry and prompted calls for measures, such as street lighting, CCTV cameras and increased police presence.

Reacting to the concerns, Dr. Chang noted the importance of tourism to the economy and highlighted the Government’s commitment to protecting those involved in the industry.

Though Jamaica has a relatively low record of attacks on visitors, Dr. Chang said it is essential to have proactive measures in place to prevent an increase in such incidents.

He said more lawmen have been deployed on the roadways, and discussions will be had about the installation of more street lights.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner, Dr. Kevin Blake said the main objective of the Constabulary is to keep Jamaica safe, and that includes citizens and visitors.

He pointed out that the Constabulary has dedicated a department which focuses solely on tourism.
