Hotel, Airbnb industries can thrive simultaneously but there must be regulations for Airbnb operations -JHTA President

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) says though it is possible for the hotel and Airbnb industries to thrive simultaneously, regulations must be implemented for Airbnb operations urgently.

Last Friday in the Senate, State Minister of Tourism, Senator Delano Seiveright said Airbnb owners and operators collected over $32 billion in revenue last year from local and international visitors.

The Government Senator explained that these earnings stemmed from nearly 840,000 guests – a massive increase when compared to the nearly 60,000 Airbnb guests in 2017.

When questioned by IRIE FM News on whether the growth in the Airbnb industry has affected the hotel sector, JHTA President Robin Russell said there is some impact, especially amongst smaller hotel owners.

Mr. Russell stressed the importance of implementing appropriate regulations to level the playing field.

Mr. Russell is suggesting that Airbnb operators pay similar taxes as hoteliers.

The JHTA President also noted that with the absence of Airbnb regulations, persons within that sector might encounter challenges in the future.
