Heightened security presence at Supreme Court ahead of ruling on Vybz Kartel’s application for release

It is expected to be known this afternoon if dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel and two of his co-appellants will be released from prison.

The ruling is to be delivered at the Supreme Court at 2 PM today.

This is after arguments were made by the defense and the prosecution yesterday and on May 13.

The habeas corpus application followed the Privy Council’s ruling on March 14, which quashed the convictions of Kartel, whose given name, is Adidja Palmer, Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell and Andre St. John.

The three men, along with Kahira Jones were convicted for the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.

The Privy Council had ordered that the case be returned to Jamaica’s appeal court to decide whether a retrial is necessary.

Meantime, there is heightened security presence near the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston.

This as many await the court’s decision on whether or not the dancehall entertainer and two of his co-appellants should be released from prison.

Kartel’s supporters have long called for the entertainer’s release.

Several army and police vehicles are parked near the court. Barricades have also been set up.
