Health Ministry awaiting report on death of teen girl during childbirth at Spanish Town Hospital
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has indicated that a determination will be made regarding action to be taken, at the end of an assessment of the circumstances that led to the death of a teen girl during childbirth at the Spanish Town Hospital.
Fourteen-year-old Anna-Shay Campbell, reportedly had a complicated and difficult delivery and died from complications of childbirth last Tuesday, December 10.
Campbell’s mother blamed the hospital’s medical staff, saying she had asked for a C-section for her daughter.
She led other relatives in a protest at the hospital.
Responding to questions from reporters on a visit to the Spanish Town Hospital yesterday, Dr. Tufton said the autopsy and investigation report on Campbell’s death will determine corrective action.
The Minister, along with Chief Medical Officer at Spanish Town Hospital Dr. Jacqueline Wright James, explained that a report should be ready in about six weeks.
Dr. Tufton noted that the level of compassionate care by medical staff at hospitals, in general, is not where it should be.
