Health Minister calls for protective gear to be part of relief packages for those impacted by Hurricane Melissa

Persons who seek to distribute relief packages in areas severely impacted by Hurricane Melissa are being urged to include protective gear to safeguard against hazards and contaminated floodwaters.

Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton made the appeal during a virtual “Let’s Talk Recovery: Food & Water-borne Diseases After a Disaster” meeting today.

Dr. Tufton said following the hurricane it is expected that there will be an increase in infectious as well as food and water-borne diseases.

He pointed out that while illness can be prevented if persons avoid contaminated water, it is understood that in some affected areas hurricane survivors do not have that option.

As a result, he is calling on persons to add protective items to the list of things being donated to those in need.
