Gunmen who remove serial numbers from guns to make them untraceable warned that effort will fail
Gunmen who remove serial numbers from illegal weapons in an attempt to make them untraceable, are being warned that their efforts will fail.
This as the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) assures that its Forensic Services Branch (FSB) has the capacity to function at internationally accepted standards.
Speaking with IRIE FM News during the JCF’s Transformation Expo at the National Arena today, Operations Officer in the FSB, Deputy Superintendent Miguel Bernard, reminded that it is a criminal offence to alter firearms.
He said the offence can result in a maximum of ten years imprisonment.
He warned that if criminals choose to alter firearms or remove serial numbers, there are ways to still trace the guns.
The FSB is a newly-established unit – an essential addition to the JCF’s crime-fighting capabilities.
DSP Bernard noted that though the JCF always possessed forensic capacity, the establishment of the FSB allows it to respond to the needs of investigators in a consolidated way.
