Greenwood not included in Reggae Boyz squad for World Cup qualifiers

Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has not been included in Jamaica’s 26-man squad for the opening two matches in the final round of the 2026 Concacaf World Cup qualifiers.

That confirmation came from Reggae Boyz head coach Steve McClaren, who addressed the matter at this morning’s press conference held at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) headquarters in New Kingston.

Greenwood, who now plays for Olympique Marseille in France’s Ligue 1, recently received his Jamaican passport, fueling speculation that he would make his debut for the national team in this campaign. However, his name was absent when McClaren revealed the squad.

Responding to a question from IRIE FM’s Roger Hasfal, McClaren explained the situation:

“It’s certainly not a part of it I thinking for the next two weeks in terms of the camp and the players coming together no but for the future of course there’s a quality player and it’s quite simple at the moment he’s not ready to commit to to anything international football wise we have to respect that would also keep in touch with them but focus on what we have and what we can control.”

He added:

“Yeah it’s a disappointment for everybody because it would have been a big asset and he would have come here and enjoyed his football but look you know as soon as that decision was made and he couldn’t commit you move on you don’t harp on about it and you don’t go well what if what if this what if that you move on and you control what you can control so we moved on very quickly from that and you know we’ve picked the squad and we’re looking for the next two weeks focus entirely on this squad.”

Jamaica’s Qualifying Schedule

Drawn in Group B, the Reggae Boyz will begin their campaign away to Bermuda at the Bermuda National Sports Centre on September 5. They will then return home to host Trinidad and Tobago at the National Stadium in Kingston on September 9.

The team will travel to Willemstad to face Curaçao at the Stadion Ergilio Hato on October 10, before hosting Bermuda in Kingston on October 14.

The final two group matches are scheduled for November — against Trinidad and Tobago at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain on November 13, followed by the return fixture against Curaçao at the National Stadium on November 18.
