Govt. pledges support for children injured in St Andrew crash

The government has pledged support for students who were injured in a bus crash yesterday in Dublin Castle, St. Andrew.

The cost of treatment, including prescription medication, will be fully covered.

Twenty-one individuals, 18 of them students, were transported to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) after the Hiace bus in which they were passengers, overturned.

The children, who are from the Louise Bennett-Coverley primary and St. Martin de Porres primary schools, were treated and released yesterday.

Two individuals, including the bus driver, remain hospitalised in critical but stable condition, having sustained burns in the accident.

Another accident yesterday claimed the life of a woman.

Her death increased the number of road fatalities for this year to 287.

Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) Dr. Lucien Jones says the crash at Dublin Castle yesterday ought to be a wake up call for the nation in how road safety is treated.

He is raising concern about an increase in collisions since May.

He says a strong signal must be sent to drivers and motorcyclists, that they will be sanctioned swiftly, if they fail to comply with the new road traffic act.
