Gov’t extends deadline for waiver of import duty and GCT on importation of relief items to aid Hurricane Melissa victims

The Government has extended the deadline for the waiver of import duty and General Consumption Tax (GCT) on the importation of relief items to aid Hurricane Melissa victims.

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness indicated the extension of the deadline from November 28 to December 31.

The move follows a call from Opposition Leader Mark Golding, who said the allotted timeline was too short.

Dr. Holness said the move was made after recognizing that recovery efforts are ongoing and will extend beyond the one-month period.

In the meantime, he pointed out that the importation of Starlink and other related equipment will be free of custom duty.

He said this is to get connection back in communities that are in dire need.

He also urged Jamaicans who might take advantage of the opportunity to be considerate.

Holness was speaking in parliament yesterday.
