Gov’t considering use of relief vouchers for persons affected by Hurricane Melissa

As the country transitions out of the immediate response through the recovery, reconstruction and return to normality phases, government is considering the use of relief vouchers, for persons affected by Hurricane Melissa.

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness noted that it’s costly to continue the method of relief being undertaken now.

He said over time, this type of support will taper off but people will still need aid, so the administration has to find other means of providing support that are reliable and accountable.

Dr. Holness said the coupon or voucher system will also require that business resume normal operations, for persons to be able to access the aid.

He said the government is supporting business resumption through loans and grants.

The Prime Minister said vouchers also allow for accountability as it relates to donations and distribution.
