Gov’t and Opposition members debate bill that will create Jamaica’s 15th parish

There was a heated debate in Parliament this afternoon, as the government piloted the bill that will create Jamaica’s 15th parish.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie piloted The Act to Amend the Counties and Parishes Act, to Declare the City Municipality of Portmore the Fifteenth Parish of Jamaica and for Connected Matters.

Mr. McKenzie said today was a day of tremendous historical significance, as lawmakers begin the process of transforming Portmore into the Parish of Portmore.

He stated that this is the first time in the history of post colonial Jamaica that a new parish is being created.

Mr. McKenzie said the administration had put in place a structure for the people of Portmore to live their best lives.

Meanwhile the Opposition blasted the government  saying the bill is for the resurrection of political tribalism in Jamaica.

Opposition Spokesman with Responsibility for Matters Concerning Portmore Fitz Jackson said the date of the tabling of the bill was a sad day in the history of the Parliament.
