Government working to repatriate 34 Jamaican fishermen from Colombia
Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamina Johnson Smith says the government is working to repatriate 34 Jamaican fishermen in Colombia, who were allegedly fishing in that country illegally.
The men are reportedly from Old Harbour in St. Catherine.
Speaking in the State of the Nation debate in the senate today, Mrs. Johnson Smith noted that there are eight more people of other nationalities on the vessel.
She said her ministry is in contact with Colombian authorities to finalize the repatriation process.
Mrs. Johnson Smith noted that illegal fishing is a serious offence.
She added that the fishing profession is risky and boat owners should ensure they have insurance.
