Government worker arrested following investigations into alleged fraudulent pension payments
An administrative assistant at a government establishment was arrested on Thursday, following an investigation into alleged fraudulent pension payments.
The 49-year-old woman from St. Catherine was arrested at the establishment at about 10 AM by detectives assigned to the Financial Unit of the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigations Branch.
Investigations revealed that between March 2017 and May 2018, seventeen payments totalling just over $1 million intended for three pensioners were transferred to the woman’s account from another government body.
However, the accused allegedly withdrew the funds shortly after they were deposited.
Investigators later discovered that the pensioners slated to benefit were deceased.
Following her arrest on Thursday, the government worker was transported to the Financial Investigation Division, where she was questioned in the presence of her attorney.
She was subsequently charged with possession of criminal property, receiving stolen property, and conspiracy to defraud.
The accused was offered bail in the sum of $100,000 and is to appear in the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court on May 29.
