Government to petition King Charles for reparations
The Jamaican government will take the quest for reparations a step further, with the pending submission of a petition to King Charles.
In her contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the Lower House today, Culture Minister Olivia Grange said the petition has questions relating to slavery, which the government wants the privy council to advise the King on.
Through the questions, the government is seeking a determination that slavery was unlawful and that people in Jamaica should get redress.
Ms. Grange noted that the government wants to have the reparations issue settled before Jamaica transitions into a republic.
