Government to conduct detailed technical assessment to understand implications of recent US tariffs on Jamaica’s trade/industrial policy
The Government will be conducting a detailed technical assessment to fully understand how the recent imposition of tariffs on imports to the United States from all countries will affect Jamaica’s trade and industrial policy.
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled the new import taxes on all goods entering his country, with a baseline tariff on all imports of at least 10% to as high as 54%.
The tax imposed on imports from Jamaica is at least 10 %.
The 10% tariff will come into effect on April 5 while the higher duties will start on April 9.
Speaking at the opening ceremony for the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association’s expo last evening, Prime Minister Andrew Holness addressed the matter.
He explained that the U.S. tariff approach introduces a significant shift in global trade policy which could impact Jamaica.
The Prime Minister noted that his administration is seeking urgent clarification from the U.S. on the new tax policy.
He also sought to assure that the implementation of the tariff policy does not represent a breakdown in the bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Jamaica.
