The deployment of Jamaican troops to Haiti has been put on hold, as recovery efforts continue in Jamaica following Hurricane Beryl. 

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that the government was awaiting the finalizing of resources and agreements for the deployment of troops, as part of a multi-national security support to Haiti. 

Jamaica and several other Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations committed to being a part of the mission. 

A joint training involving 300 personnel from Jamaica, Bahamas and Belize was undertaken on the island between March and April, in preparation.

However, Information Minister, Dr. Dana Morris Dixon said a date has not been set for the troops to be deployed, as the Jamaica Defence Force’s first priority remains with its homeland. 

She said the force is helping with Jamaica’s rebuilding efforts. 

She said the government will reassess in the next few months, if it has the resources to send elsewhere.
