Government allocates additional $300M to “Rebuild Jamaica” initiative

An additional $300 million has been allocated to the Government’s “Rebuild Jamaica” initiative.

Under the initiative, citizens whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Beryl are receiving cash grants to help rebuild.

The grants range in value from $50,000 to $400,000.

Initially, the Government said 8,700 homes were affected by the hurricane but it said that number has increased to 13,500.

Speaking during a post-Cabinet press briefing this morning Social Security Minister, Pearnel Charles Junior said the $1 billion initially announced has increased to $1.3 billion.

He also notes that the Ministry is continuing its re-verification process to ensure that persons whose homes were assessed for damage get the grants needed.
