Goods worth about $30M lost in fire at a section of Ocho Rios Market

Goods worth about $30 million were lost in yesterday’s fire which destroyed a section of the Ocho Rios Market in St. Ann.

It’s reported that the blaze began sometime after 4:00 P.M.

Firefighters say one unit each from the Ocho Rios and St. Ann’s Bay fire stations responded to the blaze.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

It’s reported that 12 stalls made of board and zinc were destroyed.

An alleged eyewitness said he was outside the market when someone alerted them about the fire

A vendor who asked not to be named said she was on the road when she heard about the blaze and immediately came to the scene.

She said while she is grateful her stall was not impacted, she knows the owners of the impacted stalls and she is saddened by the incident.

In the meantime, Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay Michael Belnavis said this is the worst fire he has witnessed at the Ocho Rios Market.

He said Member of Parliament for St.Ann North East, Matthew Samuda, along with Minister of Local Government Desmond Mckenzie will tour the market today.

Scores of burnt onions and potatoes could be seen among the rubble as well as several pumpkins, pineapples and other items.
