Full investigation launched into fatal shooting of a police officer during a gas station robbery on Friday night

The Police High Command says a full investigation has been launched into the fatal shooting of a police officer at the intersection of West Avenue and Beechwood Avenue, in Kingston.

47-year-old Corporal Christopher Smith who was attached to the Kingston Western Division was shot during a robbery at a gas station on Friday.

Reports from the Half Way Tree Criminal Investigations Branch are that at about 10:54 P.M., Corporal Smith drove his private motor car to a petrol station in the area to purchase fuel, unknowingly entering an active robbery scene. 

While he waited to be served, one of the robbers attacked him and shot him several times.

He succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning at the Kingston Public Hospital while undergoing surgery.

In a statement, the Police High Command sought to assure the public that no effort will be spared in ensuring that those responsible are apprehended and brought before the courts. 

It appealed to anyone who may have information that can assist in this investigation to come forward. 

It said information, no matter how small, could be critical in solving this case. 

The Police High Command said Corporal Smith’s service and dedication to the force and the people of Jamaica will not be forgotten. 

It also extended condolences to Corporal Smith’s family, friends and colleagues.
