Fred Kerley was arrested for alleged battery on a law enforcement officer
Decorated American sprinter Fred Kerley was arrested in Miami Beach for alleged battery on a law enforcement officer and other charges in an incident that was captured in police body camera footage.
Miami Beach Police officials said officers were investigating an incident in the 100 block of 9th street late Thursday night when Kerley approached the scene, expressing concerns about his vehicle, which was parked nearby.
Kerley’s “demeanor became increasingly aggressive” and he was asked to leave the area but he refused, police said.
Police stated that despite attempts to de-escalate the situation, Kerley assumed a fighting stance and ignored lawful commands.
Emergency backup was called, and a dart-firing stun gun was deployed to subdue Kerley, who was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.
Kerley faces charges of battery on a police officer, corrections officer, or firefighter, resisting an officer without violence and disorderly conduct.
Kerley, who won the Olympic silver edal over 100meters at the 2020 Olympics also won the bronze in the same event at last year’s Paris Olympics .
