Foreign Affairs Minister responds to concerns over importation of CCTV cameras
Foreign Affairs Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith says duty-free importation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to support crime-fighting is something to consider but is not an immediate agenda item.
Mrs. Johnson Smith was responding to questions at the 10th Biennial Diaspora Conference in Montego Bay, St. James yesterday.
With CCTV cameras being used to help identify criminals across the country, it was suggested that the Government take steps to allow citizens to import the technology without taxes.
Mrs. Johnson Smith said while the suggestion could be considered, it is important to note that improvements in Jamaica’s macroeconomic stability are attributed to its current tax policy.
She also noted that any change in that policy will fall under the responsibility of the Finance Ministry.
