Fletcher fires Montego Bay United to victory as leaders maintain cushion in Jamaica Premier League

Former champions Montego Bay United continued their impressive run of form to maintain a four-point lead at the top of the table in the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League, following a 2-0 win over Molynes United in their Match Day 8 encounter at Stadium East on Sunday.

Former Cornwall College striker Jordaine Fletcher was the star of the show, netting both goals in the 45th and 58th minutes to seal a third straight victory for the Montegonians. The result moved coach Xavier Gilbert’s side to 19 points, solidifying their position as early front-runners in the competition.

Racing United kept pace in second place after a 3-0 triumph over Spanish Town Police at Ferdie Neita Park, ending their streak of three consecutive draws. Goals from Tajay Grant, Giovanni Cunningham, and substitute Haile Beckles in the second half ensured the win, lifting them to 15 points, four behind the leaders.

Also on 15 points are Portmore United, who climbed to third following a 4-2 victory over defending champions Cavalier in the feature match of the Stadium East double-header. In a thrilling contest played in wet conditions, Cavalier took an early lead through Daryl Massicot in the first minute, before Ronaldo Robinson equalized for Portmore in the 18th. Kwayne Thompson restored Cavalier’s advantage in the 30th, but Portmore stormed back — Robinson completing his brace in the 40th minute after Peter McGregor had leveled just minutes earlier. Romeo Guthrie sealed the result with a 70th-minute strike to hand Portmore a statement win.

Elsewhere, Mount Pleasant came from behind to secure a 3-1 win over Chapelton Maroons at Drax Hall. After Zhaine Pinnock gave the visitors a ninth-minute lead, the home side hit back through Claver Nugent (30th), Raheem Edwards (35th), and Demario Phillips (89th).

At the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, Tivoli Gardens also came from behind to defeat Harbour View 2-1, with defenders Rodico Wellington (28th) and Barrington Pryce (75th) scoring after Rohan Brown had given the visitors a third-minute advantage.
