Finance Minister says overtime pay for junior doctors being discussed

Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke has indicated that the matter of overtime pay for junior doctors is still being discussed.

He was responding to questions from Opposition Spokesman on Finance Julian Robinson in Parliament yesterday, as the Standing Finance Committee went through the supplementary estimates.

The issue of overtime pay has been a sore point for years, in negotiations between the government and the Jamaica Medical Doctors Association, JMDA.

The doctors claim that the government is yet to establish a set rate for overtime, under the extra hours worked policy, which should have been effected in April.

Upset doctors have been restive about the protracted negotiations.

Dr. Clarke pointed out that until a new agreement is reached, sessional rates continue to be applied.
