FID says it is unable to quantify exact amount defrauded from SSL accounts

The Financial Investigations Division, FID, says it is unable to quantify the exact amount of money which has been defrauded from several accounts at stocks and securities limited, SSL.

Several persons including renowned Jamaican athlete, Usain Bolt are believed to be victims of the alleged fraud at the investment company.

In a statement on Monday evening, the FID assured that it and the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s fraud squad are continuing their investigation into the alleged fraudulent activities.

The FID said it is also collaborating with the financial services commission which is executing the requisite protocols and actions in accordance with its remit as regulator of non-deposit-taking institutions.

It noted however, that the case appears to be a complex one; for three main reasons.

These are, the number and types of accounts affected, the number and types of transactions conducted on the affected accounts, and the length of time, during which questionable actions were taken against some of the affected accounts.

Chief technical director of the FID Selvin Hay, has assured that the matter is being treated with the highest priority and all investigative steps are being taken.

The FID said statements are being collected and interviews are being conducted.

It said work into unravelling this fraud will be thorough with a view to identifying all connected parties and bringing them to justice.
